Indian Security Startup Offers Free Software

Wep Solutions, an Indian security software and services startup, is offering its unified threat management appliance software free to small businesses around the world.

Taking a cue from India’s large outsourcers, the company plans to make money from selling low-cost services to businesses that download the software from its Web site, said K. Purushottam, joint CEO of Wep.

The company had offered the technology and a managed security service to small and medium-size Indian companies, but it realized that for adoption to take off beyond a few hundred customers, it had to offer the software free worldwide, Purushottam said.

“Our focus now shifts to offering the services to those users who want support as an option,” he said.

Eight Great Software Freebies

With PCs, the best things in life are often free. Here are some of my favorites for working with photos, editing documents, exploring the Web, and more.

When you buy a new PC, you could spend hundreds of dollars outfitting it with useful software. Or you could equip it with an equally bountiful collection of applications that don’t cost a cent. The best free programs aren’t just adequate substitutes for paid ones–they’re outstanding software creations in their own right.

All free software isn’t created equal, though. Some of it, for instance, exists mostly to let PC users test-drive paid programs before they plunk down money: The free versions may or may not have enough features to be valuable. And some sources of free downloads are downright sketchy, offering programs that may infect your machine with adware, spyware, or other unwantedware. That’s why it makes sense to do score your freebies either at the site of the software company in question or at a big-name site such as Cnet’s Download.com or PC World Downloads.

Herewith, a few of my favorite freebies–the apps I tend to install on new computers within a day or two of getting them out of the box. Unless otherwise indicated, all these work on Windows–XP, Vista, and 7.

Shield Your System

Sad but true: If you’re running Windows, no piece of software is more essential that an up-to-date antivirus utility. Avast Free Antivirus sports the same virus detection and removal features as the company’s $60 Internet Security package. (The latter adds some advanced tools such as anti-spam protection and a firewall; the free app does promote its paid counterpart, but in a relatively unobtrusive manner.) If you use Avast, navigate the Web with a modern browser (see “Browse Better” below), and steer clear of sites you know to be sleazy, you’ll be well-protected from the worst threats.

Opera Introduces Mini 5 and Mobile 10 Browsers

Opera’s new Mini 5 and Mobile 10 mobile Web browsers are designed to compress the data sent to a phone by up to 90 percent, speeding up browsing time and lowering bills for pay-by-byte customers. Both are now available as free downloads.

Opera Software introduced the Opera Mini 5 and Opera Mobile 10 March 16, two new mobile Web browsers that are compatible with a number of mobile phone platforms, including Google’s Android and RIM’s BlackBerry, and that are now available as free downloads.

“Keeping in mind the needs and wants our [50-million-plus] users, we have emphasized speed, desktop-like functionality and data savings in our mobile browsers,” Opera CEO Lars Boilesen said in a statement. “Today, we have made it even easier for everyone to surf, search and socialize on the Web.”

Bragging points, Opera points out, include the quality of the Web experience, the ease with which the browsers can be downloaded and the speeds at which they operate. Additionally, Opera Mini’s compression software is said to reduce the amount of data sent to a phone by up to 90 percent, which can significantly lower the bills of those users on pay-per-megabyte data plans.

The Opera interface includes features such as speed dial, tabs and a password manager, and the program lets users sync bookmarks, notes and the contacts in one’s speed dial online, offers users access to their data from any Internet connection.

The Opera Mini 5 is compatible with Java, BlackBerry, Android and Windows Mobile phones, while Opera Mobile 10 is available for Windows Mobile and Symbian S60-based phones.

With approximately 24.6 percent market share, as of February, Opera is the most-used smartphone browser, surpassing Apple’s Safari browser for the iPhone, which holds about 22.3 percent of the market.

While Opera has offered a “sneak peek” at its Opera Mini for iPhone, it has yet to release the browser for this additional platform. However, on Feb. 25, Opera introduced a beta version of Opera 10.5 for Mac that is said to “smarten up” the address bar and include multitouch navigation.

Both Opera Mini 5 and Mobile 10 can be downloaded from the Opera Software site.

Red Hat KVM underpins IBM test-and-dev cloud

Red Hat’s implementation of KVM is the virtualization underpinning of the new software test and development service for the IBM Cloud. Red Hat hopes that vote of confidence will persuade enterprises to try KVM in their own IT shops.

The service, dubbed the Smart Business Development & Test on the IBM Cloud, will rely on Red Hat’s commercialized KVM implementation, Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV) for Servers. KVM is an open source virtualization stack that supports both Linux and Windows guests, and is included in the Linux kernel.

Competitive Xen-based virtualization is the preferred virtualization technology in most current cloud computing scenarios such as Amazon Web Services while VMware is the established server virtualization incumbent. With this project, Red Hat and IBM teamed up to establish RHEV as an alternative to those virtualization powers for building out public clouds. Other customer wins for RHEV include Voddler, a Swedish Internet company and NTT Communications, a Japanese hosting provider.

“The goal of Red Hat and IBM is to create a unified ecosystem so we have a strong alternative to VMware,” said Scott Crenshaw, vice president and general manager of Red Hat’s Cloud Business Unit. He maintains that VMware has been using its “monopoly position” to limit how much organizations can afford to virtualize.

At the same time, “we don’t want to repeat the history of Xen,” which Crenshaw said consisted of 15 or so incompatible variants. KVM’ s advantage is that it comes with market-leading Red Hat Enterprise Linux and is certified against RHEL’s entire hardware and software ecosystem, he said.

Red Hat virtualization: a tough row to hoe
People outside of Red Hat say KVM and RHEV have a long way to go.

Among enterprise IT customers, interest in KVM is marginal, said Chris Wolf, senior analyst at Burton Group, at under 5% of inquiries, and then mostly from traditional Red Hat customers looking to kick the tires.

Chief among enterprise concerns about KVM is the lack of a third-party management ecosystem. When it comes to supporting virtualization, the priority for software vendors is VMware, then Microsoft Hyper-V and Citrix XenServer. “KVM is fourth in line,” Wolf said, and offerings probably won’t start to appear until 2011.

VMware pricing might open the door for KVM
Cost-conscious virtualization users might give KVM a look down the line especially if it addresses those concerns and if VMware doesn’t get more flexible on price.

AudienceScience, an online advertising delivery firm in New York, N.Y., currently virtualizes its Linux systems on VMware, but would consider KVM if VMware continues on its current price trajectory, said Nate Amsden, solutions architect.

“KVM doesn’t have the management yet, or the scalability,” Amsden said, but given the direction VMware’s price is taking, “I don’t see a bright feature for smaller companies.” Case in point, Amsden said that while VMware reduced the price for entry level Essentials SKUs with the introduction of vSphere 4, prices were dramatically increased on the high-end.

And, enterprise server virtualization aside, KVM does hold promise as a client hypervisor, Wolf said. That’s a path Red Hat is also pursuing with RHEV for Desktops, currently in beta.

“There’s a reason Citrix and VMware don’t have a client hypervisor yet — it’s not that easy,” Wolf said. As a client hypervisor, “KVM gets all the Linux drivers without having to get a separate certification stack.”

Nvidia’s New Software Enables Stereo 3D on Third-Party Shutter Glasses.

Nvidia Corp. on Monday announced its new software that will make the company’s graphics cards compatible with third-party active-shutter stereoscopic 3D glasses. The 3DTV Play software will be sold separately and will “convert” hundreds of video games and other software into stereo 3D mode.

Nvidia 3DTV Play software will be available this spring for $39.99 when acquired separately or for free when bundled with Nvidia 3D Vision kits that include wireless active-shutter stereo 3D glasses and 3D Vision USB controller/IR emitter that cost $199. The 3DTV Play software provides full support for all HDMI 1.4-compatible 3D TVs that support 1080p24, 720p60, 720p50 3D formats.

Nvidia promises that its software and graphics drivers automatically convert more than 400 games to stereoscopic 3D in real time, without the need for special patches.

“Nvidia is all about raising the bar of PC gaming, and gamers are going to love playing in 3D on one of the new Panasonic Viera 50” full HD 3D TVs. This is truly one of those ‘must experience to believe it’ moments, and we are ecstatic that consumers will have the chance to try it for themselves on any of our 15 stops across the U.S.,” said Phil Eisler, general manager of 3D Vision technology at Nvidia.

While it is a positive news that Nvidia GeForce-based personal computers will be able to output stereo 3D even in cases of third-party 3D glasses, it remains to be seen whether Nvidia’s attempt to sell software instead of hardware will be a success. Traditionally, Nvidia tries to certify certain components and get payments for its efforts from hardware vendors. This time the company decided to charge the end-users for its stereo 3D software, something that historically has not proved to be a good move for a hardware company.
